이 글은 1980년대 이후의 가야사연구를 중심으로 그 성과와 한계, 그리고 과제에 대하여 정리하였다. 가야사연구가 장족의 발전을 하게 된 것은 『일본서기』의 비판적 활용, 고고자료의 확대, 그리고 1995년 지방자치제의 실시 등에 기인한다. 이제 가야사는 ‘신화속의 역사’가 아니라 한국고대사회의 삼국과 어깨를 나란히 했던 역사로 자리매김 되었다. 가락국, 대가야 중심의 연맹체론에서 벗어나 아라가야, 비화가야, 다라국, 고자국 등의 가야 각국에 대한 연구도 축적되었다. 하지만 한계도 없지 않다. 가야사회의 발전단계가 ‘연맹체론’에 입각하여 고대국가로 발전하지 못했던 것으로 규정되고 있다. 가야 각국에 대한 연구가 아직 미흡한 형편이다. 삼한단계와 가야사의 구분이 모호하기도 하다. 가야사에 대한 왜곡도 여전하다. ‘임나일본부설’을 극복하는 과정에서 등장한 ‘백제군사령부설’은 백제의 가야지배설이다. 향후의 가야사연구에서 해결해야 할 과제도 많다. 첫째, 가야의 정치적 발전단계에 대한 재인식이 필요하다. 가야사회를 저급한 사회로 보는 것에서 벗어나야 한다. 둘째, 문헌자료를 재검토하고 정리하는 작업이 필요하다. 셋째, 가야사만이 아니라 한국사 전체의 흐름 속에서 가야사를 이해하는 것도 필요하다. 넷째, 고고자료에 지나치게 의존하거나, 고고자료를 자의적으로 해석해서도 안 된다. 다섯째, 가야사회의 발전과 멸망에 대한 다양한 관점도 필요하다. 여섯째, 신라사·백제사 연구자들의 가야지배설도 극복해야 한다.

This article studied on achievements, limitations, and tasks of former researches on early history of Gaya since the 1980s The rapid development of the research on its field is attributable to the critical use of “History of Japan”, the expansion of archeological records, and the implementation of local government system in 1995. Now, Gaya’s history has become a major chapter in the history of the ancient Korean society, bailing out from mythical history of the ancient Korean. At the same time, the research started to focusing on each polities in Gaya alliance. In spite of these progress, there are a limit. However. It is said that the development stage of the gaya was not reached to an ancient kingdom based on the ‘Alliance state Theory’. There is still a paucity of research on each polities. The distinction between the samhan and the gaya is ambiguous. Moreover, a distortion of the issue about Gaya’s political identity such as “Japan’s Colony Theory” or “Baekje Military Command Theory” are still exist. There are also many challenges to address in future research projects. First, we need a new understanding of the political development stages of Gaya. It is imperative that we take away the Gaya state as a low-level society. Second, it is necessary to review and organize the literature materials and historical texts. Third, it is necessary to understand history of gaya in the entire flux of Korean history. Fourth, we should not obsess on archeological records or interpret the archaeological data arbitrarily. Fifth, we need to have a variety of views on the development and destruction of the gaya states. Sixth, we should overcome the subjugation of Gaya propositions insisted by reseachers who understand the Gaya in the view of Silla or Baekje.
