신라·가야토기에 있어 고배와 더불어 단경호와 장경호는 편년과 지역색을 밝히는데 있어 기준 기종의 역할을 해왔다. 하지만 단경호의 경우 형태는 비슷하지만 용도가 다른 두 기종이 있다는 것을 인식하지 못하고, 같은 기종으로 분류하고 있음으로 해서 신라·가야토기 편년 연구에 많은 문제점을 잉태하고 있다. 기대 안에 얹혀서 사용되는 단경호와 장경호를 중형호라는 기종으로 모아서 형식 분류하면 단경호→중경호→장경호로 형식 변천함을 알 수 있다. 장경호는 무개장경호, 유개장경호, 대부장경호, 유개대부장경호 등 여러 형식으로 분류할수 있으며, 이 중 대부장경호와 유개장경호는 신라토기와 가야토기를 구분하는 기준으로 인식되기도 했을 정도로 일찍부터 주목을 받았다. 그런데 대부장경호와 유개장경호는 무개장경호에서 발전된 형식이므로 문화의 연속성의 법칙에 의거하여 천천히 변화하는 것을 인식하지못하고 어떤 정치체 문화의 지표로서 활용하고 있다. 본고는 우선 단경호를 고분에 부장된 양상에 따라 용도가 다른 두 기종이 있다는 것을 명확히 한 후, 기대 안에 얹혀서 사용되는 단경호의 경우 단경호에서 장경호로 형식이 변천함을 명확히 했다. 장경호는 단경호에서 형식 변천하였으며, 또 다른 새로운 형식인 유개장경호와 대부장경호가 출현함에 따라 무개장경호로 명명하여 지역색을 고찰하였다. 무개장경호는 중형호의 형식 중에서는 가장 긴 시간동안 같이 유행하기 때문에 고배의 투창을 대신하여 신라·가야토기를 구분하는 기준이 될 수 있다. 종래 대부장경호와 유개장경호를 정치체의 문화적 지표로 해석하여 신라양식 혹은 대가야양식이라고 하는 일방적 해석은 많은 문제점이 있다는 것도 지적하였다. 고고학도역사학의 일부분이며, 문헌 기록을 무시한 채 금관가야와 더불어 가야의 수많은 정치체의 문화를 고고학자가 만든 검증되지 않은 기준에 의해 그릇되게 해석하는 문제점을 직시해야 고고학이 발전할 것이다.

Short neck jar and long neck jar of Shilla and Gaya along with the stand pottery play an important role in terms of defining chronology and locality. However, short neck jar had not been identified into two different types but rather had been treated as one type which led diverse problems of understanding of the chronology of Shilla and Gaya pottery. It is clear that the short neck jar which was sat on the stand and the long neck jar can be divided into the middle neck jar. There are certain typology of short neck jar to middle neck jar and long neck jar in this sense. Long neck jar are various from with no lid, with lid and stand style also stand style with the lid. Among them long neck jar with the stand and with the lid are highlighted as they are the criteria to identify Shilla and Gaya Pottery. However, both types of pottery are developed from the long neck jar with no lid which led the conclusion that both types are the solid but congested cultural index. This work, therefore, will spot on the two different styles of short neck jar first of all. Then it will highlight the clear typology of short neck jar that sat on the stand which were developed to the long neck jar. Long neck jar was developed from the short neck and two different types such as with the lid and stand have been indicated to the new types which could be named long neck jar with no lid. This long neck jar with no lid had been favoured long time by then and so it is certain that his kind of jar identified locality of Shilla and Gaya. Long neck jar with stand and with lid are not just the congested cultural index. Archaeology is part of history and not only Guemgwan Gaya which had led wrong interpretation, many other Gayas must be re-discov ered its own but unique identity.
