호남 동부지역에 밀집 분포된 산성은 대략 100여 개소에 이른다. 섬진강과 남강의 분수령을 이루고 있으면서 아영분지와 운봉고원의 서쪽 자연경계인 백두대간 산줄기와 섬진강 중류지역을 동서로 횡단하는 오수천을 따라 산성이 집중적으로 배치되어 있다. 그리고 만경강 유역에서 섬진강 상류지역으로 진입하는 길목인 호남정맥의 슬치 부근, 공주와 부여 일대에서 진안고원 등 금강 상류지역으로 진출하려면 주로 넘었던 금남정맥의 싸리재 부근, 금산분지의 북쪽을 휘감는 산줄기에도 산성이 밀집되어 있다. 가야계 분묘유적과 산성의 분포권이 서로 중복된 점에서 상당수의 산성은, 백제 및 영산강 유역의 세력집단에 대한 방어체계를 구축하는 과정에 대가야를 비롯한 가야세력에 의해 처음 축성된 것이 아닌가 싶다.금강과 섬진강의 상류지역에 일정한 간격을 유지하며 밀집 분포된 80여 개소의 봉수는 대체로 가야계 수혈식 석곽묘의 분포권과 일치한다. 특히 100여 기의 가야계 중대형 고총이 밀집된 장계분지와 장수분지에 집중적으로 배치되어 있으면서 그곳을 방사상으로 에워싸고 있다. 그리고 산성과 밀접한 관련성을 나타내며 장계분지와 장수분지로 통하는 여러 갈래의 내륙 교통로가 잘 조망되는 산봉우리에 입지를 두었다. 봉수에서 수습된 토기류의 속성과 봉수의 분포양상만을 기준으로 추론한다면, 봉수의 설치주체는 대가야 혹은 장계분지와 장수분지에 지역적인 기반을 두고 발전했던 가야세력과의 관련성이 깊을 것으로 추정된다.

There have been approximately 100 mountain fortresses densely scattered around the east Honam area. These mountain fortresses are located intensively around the mountain ranges of Baekdudaegan, the upper stream of Geum-gang(a river), and Osu-cheon(a creek) drainage area which flows across the middle stream of Seomjin-gang(a river) from east to west. It is believed that the fortresses were built first while Gaya forces including Daegaya were constructing their defense system against Baekje, in the respect that their distribution is overlapped with that of Gaya tomb groups. The distribution of about 80 beacon mounds which are located remaining regular spaces around the upper streams of Geum-gang and Seomjin-gang is overlapped with that of Gaya tomb groups. Especially, those beacon mounds are densely located surrounding about 100 large old tombs of Gaya forces in Janggyae and Jangsu basins like the spokes of a wheel. According to the archeological results up to now, it is estimated that the main forces who built the beacon mounds are deeply related to Gaya forces including Daegaya.
