본 논문에서는 창녕지역 도질토기와 묘제를 분석하여 고대 창녕의 정치적 동향에 대해 알아보고자 하였다. 창녕지역 도질토기는 고식도질토기 단계와 신라양식 단계로 구분된다. 신라양식으로 포함되는 시기는 5세기 2/4분기이다. 기존에 설정된 ‘창녕양식’은 고배와 개 등 일부 특정 기종에 남아있던 형식을 과도하게 해석한 결과로 판단하였다. 5세기대의 창녕지역 토기는 다양한 기종의 토기들이 신라양식으로 표준화 되어가는 과정으로 이해하였다. 창녕지역 묘제는 석곽묘에서 횡구식석실묘로 변화한다. 5세기 전반의 석곽묘는 묘형, 유물부장방식으로 보아 경주를비롯한 낙동강 동안지역과 관련이 깊은 것으로 파악된다. 교동과 송현동고분군에 출현한 횡구식석실묘는 상주 등 낙동강상류지역 횡구식석실묘와 관련이 깊을 것으로 판단하였다. 6세기에 접어들면 토기 제작 기술이 일변하고 횡구식석실묘가 창녕지역 전역으로 확산되며 계성고분군이 축소된다. 교동과 송현동고분군을 정점으로 서열화 된 구조를 형성하는 것은 창녕에 대한 신라의 영향력이 한층 증대된 결과로 보았다. 토기 양식, 묘제의 변동을 통해보면 창녕지역은 5세기 전반부터 신라의 영향력 아래 놓이게 된다. 5세기대의 창녕 수장층은 일정 수준의 자치권이 보장되었을 것으로 이해되지만 6세기에 접어들면서 그 영향력은 급격히 축소되는 것으로 파악된다.

Opinions are divided between the ancient history and archaeology about whether the Changnyeong area during the 4th to the 5th century belonged to Silla or Gaya. The ancient polity Changnyeong area is consisted of the Gyeseong and the Gyo-dong·Songhyeondong tombs. The Gyeseong tombs were initially formed in the 4th century. The pottery style of the Gyeseong tombs belongs to Shilla in the 5th century. The tomb style of the Gyeseong tombs had three epoch-making events: it was the stone chamber tomb in the 5th century, the stone chamber tombs with tunnel entrance in the former half of the 6th century. The movements of the group that built the Gyeseong tombs were examined through pottery style, tomb style, and gold artifacts. As a result, Changnyeong seems to have been under the influence of Shilla since the former half of the 5th century. It is a great possibility that the Gyo-dong·Songhyeondong tombs, which emerged as the central tomb cluster of Changnyeong in the 6th century, must have been newly reorganized as the grave boundary centered around political elites. Political elites must have moved from the whole area of Changnyeong, and it must have been Shilla that planned or assisted their move.
